A man whose 2009 murder conviction was overturned because of comments by the prosecutor during the trial’s closing arguments pleaded guilty Friday in exchange for a recommendation from the prosecutor at his parole hearing.

Tyler Condon, 28, pleaded guilty to murder for the July 2007 stabbing death of his cousin, Jake Ira Hale, at an Ewa townhouse. Condon faces a mandatory life prison term with the chance for parole when he is sentenced in January.

In exchange for Condon’s guilty plea, the prosecutor promises to recommend to the parole board that Condon should be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.

The Hawaii Paroling Authority gave Condon a 60-year minimum term for the 2009 conviction, which was overturned by the state Intermediate Court of Appeals.

The appeals court ruled that the prosecutor made improper statements to the jurors to dissuade them from reaching a manslaughter verdict.
