A clean South Shore swell brought in waves with 6-foot faces around Diamond Head on Thursday, and a high-surf advisory remained in effect through 6 p.m. tonight.

"It was just really very fun-sized surf," city Ocean Safety chief Jim Howe said. "It was challenging to beginners, excellent for interim surfers and super-fun for the pro guys.

"It’s like a perfect, pretty day."

Lifeguards made one rescue and 18 "assists" in Waikiki, where wave faces reached 3 to 4 feet.

The National Weather Service issued a high-surf advisory for south-facing shores of all islands as waves were expected to rise to 6 to 8 feet overnight.

Forecasters warned people to be on the lookout for dangerous, breaking waves that can lead to rough surf and hazardous rip currents.
