Wie in, Kono out at LPGA Lotte Championship

Stephanie Kono missed the cut and fellow Punahou graduate Michelle Wie made it after completing their second rounds today in the LPGA Lotte Championship at windy Ko Olina Golf Club on West Oahu.

Wie shot a 4-over 76 to drop to 2-over 146 after 36 holes. The projected cut is now plus 2 due to windy conditions in the afternoon. When Wie finished her round the cut was at even. Kono shot a 5-over 77 to finish at 6-over 150. She missed the cut.

Wie took a wrong turn at her opening hole and just kept going en route to a 5-over 41 on her opening nine.

She and Kono started on the back. Wie double-bogeyed the 10th and bogeyed the 11th and 12th, before parring the par-5 13th, one of only three for her opening nine. Her lone birdie was at the par-5 14th. She also bogeyed 16 and 18 to fall out of contention. She shot a 1-under 35 on her back nine with three birdies and two bogeys. The birdie at eight may have kept Wie around for the weekend.

Kono also double-bogeyed the 10th and picked up another bogey at the 15th. She carded a birdie at the par-3 16th, but bogeyed the 17th to make the turn at 39. She had seven pars on her back nine and two bogeys at the par-4 second and third holes.

Second-round leader Suzann Pettersen shot a 69 today to go to 10 under for the tournament and take a one-shot advantage over defending champion Ai Miyazato, who is 9 under after carding a 68. Pettersen playing partner Beatriz Recari is tied for third at 7 under. She fired a 2-under 70 for her round.
