Chase Wago waited his turn to become a contributor to another winning Mid-Pacific season.
His patience has rewarded the Owls handsomely. The 6-foot sophomore scattered eight hits, keeping No. 5 ‘Iolani scoreless for six innings as No. 2 Mid-Pacific held on for a 4-2 win on Tuesday at Damon Field.
Cal Muramaru provided the big hit for Mid-Pacific, belting a three-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning.
MPI improved to 10-2-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. With two games left, a regular-season title and an automatic state-tournament berth are within reach. The Owls face Saint Louis next Tuesday.
‘Iolani slipped to 7-5.
"Any time you win in the ILH, you feel good," Owls coach Dunn Muramaru said. "We scratched that one run (in the fifth inning) and then Cal just hit the ball."
Wago struck out one and walked none, mixing a fastball and nice curveball.
"I just had to execute pitches and let my defense play," the southpaw said. "I kept throwing strikes and kept my pitches down."
Wago spent his freshman season sitting on the bench, absorbing knowledge. He threw more pitches, in all probability, in the bullpen than he did on the mound, but MPI’s state-championship run made the waiting worthwhile.
"They were awesome last year. As long as we won, it was fine by me. I sat by the coaches and I kept learning," Wago said. "As a team, with 12 guys that graduated last year, it’s been a great experience. No one would’ve thought we would compete with everyone."
Now Wago is 5-0 in league play, including two wins over ‘Iolani. The last time he faced the Raiders, he threw a five-hit shutout. He was on that same route Tuesday with a five-hit shutout after six until the visitors mustered two runs in the top of the seventh. Wago finished the game, retiring Bronson Ichimura on a groundout
Wago’s resilience was key in a pitchers’ duel. ‘Iolani ace Joshua Inouye was superb through four innings, allowing no runs and no hits. But the Owls scraped together a classic small-ball inning to push ahead.
Noah Shackles led off and got plunked on the helmet, and courtesy runner Jarrod Infante stole second base after being caught leaning. Infante beat the throw to second by Inouye.
Raiders coach Brent Shimokawa was incensed.
"He was picked off. Our infielder had the ball and was in the base path, and the runner (Infante) ran out of the base path. He should’ve been out. I showed the umpire. (Infante) was eight feet out, but he didn’t want to hear me out. That’s his decision to make. He missed that call," Shimokawa said.
Then came an 0-2 pitch in the dirt that Ryan Kiyotaki swung at and missed. The ball bounced to the backstop for a wild pitch and Kiyotaki reached base. With runners at the corners, Jarrett Lum grounded to second and the throw home by Matt Campos was off line and short and Infante scored.
With two outs, Inouye walked Bryce Nagata intentionally to load the bases. Cal Muramaru then socked a line drive deep to center for a bases-clearing triple.
"That was the only pitch they threw to me all game, fastball inside," he said. "He looked sharp, still. The speed and velocity were still there, but that’s what I wanted."
The Raiders rallied with two outs in the top of the seventh. Campos was hit by a pitch and Caleb Duhay doubled to right-center. Pinch hitter Aaron Nakasone’s infield single brought Campos home, and Max Look’s single up the middle scored Duhay to make it 4-2. Then Wago induced Ichimura into a grounder to second, ending the threat.
