OIA looking into bottle throwing
The Oahu Interscholastic Association is looking into eyewitness reports of bottles and cans being thrown from the bleachers during the Kahuku-Kaiser football game played at Kaiser Stadium on Friday.
Late in the game, with Kaiser driving for a go-ahead touchdown, bottled water containers were hurled at the press box, and at least one half-full soda can reached it.
During an injury timeout, the scoreboard operator was accused by angry fans of cheating. The operator is actually part of the officiating crew and not hired by the home team.
The pressbox stands approximately 30 feet above the bleachers, directly over fans. At one point, the public address announcer requested security for the pressbox.
OIA executive director Raymond Fujino said that no official report had been submitted by the officiating crew by Monday afternoon. Fujino said the league will look into the situation.
Kaiser upset then-No. 3 Kahuku 20-19.
Hallums stands out in Vegas tourney
Every year, the Kamehameha Warriors take their elite squad to the Durango Classic in Las Vegas. It’s the ultimate test in the middle of an already challenging ILH girls volleyball season.
The Warriors reached the quarterfinals of the massive 64-team tourney, falling to a tough Redondo Union (Calif.) squad. Kamehameha finished fifth in the tournament, with Gonzaga-bound outside hitter Tiyana Hallums named to the all-tournament team.
Kamehameha, 4-0 and ranked No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10, went 6-1 at the tourney.
"We had a lot of great team wins for us across the board," coach Chris Blake said. "We played a lot of big matches, but that Redondo team we played was a really great team. We didn’t play our best match and a lot was due to what they did."
The Warriors began play on Friday and dug deep from the start, trailing Los Alamitos 24-18 before rallying to win the game and the match. Co-captains Hallums and Mia Heirakuji were key contributors.
"(Hallums) is a great leader emotionally and with her play. She does a great job handling the workload and also understanding her role with the team," Blake said of one of his three-year starters.
Redondo lost a close match against Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) in the semifinals. Mitty was ranked No. 3 nationally in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Rankings. Assumption (Ky.) beat two-time defending champion Torrey Pines (Calif.) for the title.
The Warriors returned on Sunday afternoon and had a light practice on Monday.
