Trail reopens 2 days after hikers rescued
The state reopened Kalalau Trail at the Kee Beach trail head Tuesday after rising stream waters that trapped 121 hikers on Sunday receded.
"The stream level had gone back down to normal," said spokeswoman Deborah Ward of the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The popular Kauai trail reopened sometime before 8 a.m. The state closed it Monday due to dangerous stream water conditions.
Crews of the Kauai Fire Department rescued stranded hikers at Hanakapiai on Sunday and Monday after rapidly rising stream waters prevented them from crossing.
Failed sensor causes H-1 lights to go dark
The overhead lights illuminating the H-1 freeway in town were working properly Tuesday evening after they went dark during the pre-dawn commute in the morning, state transportation officials said.
A worn-out photo cell, which serves as an indicator for the lights to turn out, caused the freeway lights in the Kalihi area to go dark for several hours early Tuesday morning, Department of Transportation spokeswoman Caroline Sluyter said. Work crews replaced the cell.
County building is evacuated in blast scare
Maui police evacuated the Maui County Service Center because of suspected explosive devices in one of the vehicles in the parking lot.
County spokesman Rod Antone said the incident involved a man on his way to the Police Department to turn in the suspected explosive devices he had found. While driving to the department, he called police, and dispatch told him to pull over and officers would come to him, Antone said.
The man pulled into the service center’s parking lot in Kahului. About 100 county employees and 50 to 60 members of the public were then evacuated from the service center at Maui Mall at about 12:55 p.m. Tuesday.
The devices were said to be a mortar round and a grenade, according to a media advisory issued Tuesday by Maui County.
