Two sparingly used receivers —
David Graves
and
Chinedu Amadi
— will be on the 64-player travel roster for Friday’s game against Brigham Young in Provo, Utah.
There is concern about receiver depth, with Justin Clapp and Scott Harding suffering from a variety of ailments.
Billy Ray Stutzmann, who missed the past two games after having hand surgery, also will make the trip, although the Warriors want to be cautious in the number of reps he gets. Stutzmann still has eight screws and a plate in his left hand.
"We’ll try to get Stutzmann through the game," coach Norm Chow said.
Graves is making his second tour as a receiver. The junior started two games at quarterback in 2011. At the end of spring training, Graves and Jeremy Higgins were bracketed atop the depth chart at quarterback.
But Sean Schroeder transferred to UH this summer and was named the No. 1 quarterback after the third practice of training camp. Graves moved to receiver.
Graves moved back to quarterback during the bye week between the season opener against Southern California and the second game against Lamar. He played a series against Lamar, but did not throw a pass.
This past Sunday, quarterback Cayman Shutter was activated after serving a three-game suspension for his no-contest plea to a driving-under-the-influence charge. Shutter practiced as the No. 2 quarterback the past two days, prompting Graves’ return to receiver.
Chow said Graves "looked really good" as a receiver during team drills.
Graves also will serve as the emergency quarterback.
Amadi was expected to have an immediate impact as a freshman in 2011. But he suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery and missed the entire season. This year he has bounced among running back, wideout and inside receiver. He also is a backup kick returner.
Iosefa on the mend
The Warriors are hopeful running back Joey Iosefa will be available for this week’s game.
He suffered an ankle injury against Lamar, and was wearing a medical boot for three days in the week leading to the Nevada game. Despite his pleas to play, Iosefa was held out of the game.
John Lister, Will Gregory and Sterling Jackson will have expanded roles this week.
Mainland-bound today
The Warriors will practice early this morning, then leave this afternoon for Los Angeles, where they will spend the night.
They will have a walk-through at a high school on Thursday morning, then take a charter flight to Salt Lake City. They are expected to arrive in Provo on Thursday evening.
