Blaze damages mac nut factory
Some $80,000 in damage was caused to a small room of the Hawaiian Host macadamia nut factory in Captain Cook in a fire Sunday, Hawaii County fire officials said.
Firefighters took 18 minutes to get the fire under control after receiving the call at 5:22 p.m.
Fire crews arrived at the two-story metal warehouse and found smoke coming out of the vents and eaves of the first-floor "sampling room." Employees had been evacuated.
The fire was contained to the room, which holds two roaster ovens, officials said.
Officials said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
Molokai man saved from sea
A 66-year-old Molokai man was safely ashore Sunday night after spending the late afternoon clinging to a capsized canoe a mile out in the ocean.
A person on shore spotted the man’s canoe drifting a mile off Kamalo Wharf at about 3:30 p.m. and called the Fire Department.
Maui County fire rescue personnel on personal watercraft and rescue boats and in a helicopter were joined by a Coast Guard helicopter and cutter and a private ferry in the search.
Another man, who had been paddling with the missing man when they became separated, also joined in the search using a private vessel. He was able to locate his friend — uninjured and in good condition — about a mile offshore of Kakahaia Beach Park, about six miles west of where he was last spotted.
The resident of Ualapue, on the east end of Molokai, was reported to be in good condition with no injuries, a Maui fire official said.
