A man was treated and released from a hospital after being shot in the chest Friday morning in Holualoa.

Kona police began investigating the shooting after responding to a 7:47 a.m. report of a gunshot victim on Waiono Meadows Road. They found a 26-year-old Holualoa man with a chest wound.

The man told police that he and his girlfriend were walking down Waiono Meadows Road and got into a confrontation with an acquaintance driving up the road. The woman in the car reportedly shot him with a rifle, and fled in the vehicle toward Highway 180. 

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and released. 

The shooting is being investigated as an attempted murder.
