This is the first week of the second chance for Hawaii punter Alex Dunnachie and quarterback Cayman Shutter.
Both were suspended for the Warriors’ first three games after each entered no-contest pleas this summer to driving-under-the-influence charges. They are eligible to play in Friday’s road game against Brigham Young.
While under suspension, they were allowed to practice, attend classes and receive scholarship checks.
"It’s fun to see them back," coach Norm Chow said. "There’s a glow in their eyes."
Dunnachie, who is considered to be a pro prospect, will reclaim the punter’s job. Shutter is competing for the No. 2 quarterback’s job behind starter Sean Schroeder.
"We’re giving them a chance," Chow said. "No question, they’ve paid their dues, in my mind."
Receiver/returner Scott Harding, a former professional Australian rules football player, had punted in Dunnachie’s absence. Harding relied on a rugby-style technique in which he would roll out to the perimeter. Harding was skilled at kicking with either foot.
Asked if he would emulate Harding’s technique, Dunnachie smiled and said: "It’s about the Demo."
Chris "Demo" Demarest, who coaches the special teams, wants Dunnachie to boom away on punts.
"My leg is feeling good," Dunnachie said. "Whatever the team needs me to do, I’ll do."
Dunnachie said it was helpful that he was allowed to practice with the team during his suspension.
"It’s not like I had to go through and bond again with the team," Dunnachie said. "It feels good. It feels comfortable. It feels relaxing. I look forward to going out there and playing again."
Chow said Shutter will replace Harding as the holder on place-kicks.
"I like to think that holding is kind of like riding a bike," Shutter said. "You practice all year, then you take some time off, and you come back, and it’s like you never left."
During team drills on Monday, Shutter took reps as the No. 2 quarterback. Shutter, David Graves and Jeremy Higgins are competing for that job. Chow said Shutter has a good chance of making the 64-player travel roster.
Of his work in practice, Shutter said: "It was good to get the blood flowing again. I took some snaps under fire. That’s what I want. I’m getting a chance now, and I intend to make the most of it. It’s our job, as a quarterback, to take command of the offense. That’s the most important thing, to get back to a position of leadership. There’s nothing like it. You can’t simulate it. Getting reps is the only way to accomplish it."
