Rainbow Wahine beat alumnae in soccer
In its return from a winless road trip, the Hawaii women’s soccer team blitzed the UH alumnae 4-1 on Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Alexis Colacchio, Krystal Pascua, Christy Watanabe and Tiana Fujimoto found the net for the Rainbow Wahine, who took a 3-1 halftime lead.
"This was good for us to play against good competition, but still feel loose," UH coach Michele Nagamine said. "The alums put together a pretty good team."
As an exhibition match, the game did not count on the Wahine’s record (5-3-2). UH returns to action on Friday at Cal State Bakersfield, then opens Big West Conference play on Sunday at Cal State Northridge.
Ambree Ako scored the lone goal for the alumnae.
MacKinnon tournament a success
The 10th annual Mike MacKinnon junior tennis tournament was held last weekend at Kailua District Park, celebrating the life of one of Hawaii’s most amiable players.
MacKinnon’s family and friends started a scholarship fund in 1998 — the year MacKinnon died in a car accident. More than $75,000 has been collected and distributed to fund tennis training for kids whose families need financial assistance. The fund has also provided tournament entry fees, equipment and travel funds.
MacKinnon was killed two weeks after reaching the quarterfinals of the Kailua Racquet Club Men’s Night Doubles. After a rough start — he lost his first tennis match 8-0 and had to be coaxed back into the game by ‘Iolani pro Mark Skillicorn — MacKinnon became one of Hawaii’s finest juniors. He won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title in 1998 and reached the state high school final.
MacKinnon was also one of the game’s most popular juniors, receiving Hawaii’s 1998 Jim Howe Sportsmanship Award for his integrity and sportsmanship.
