Can’t wait for same-sex marriage
The experts expect same-sex couples are very eager to tie the knot the moment the new marriage equality law goes into effect Monday.
The state’s electronic system is set up to take applications from couples at midnight that day. And independent agents will be standing by to answer any questions by phone as early as 12 a.m. on Monday.
Check it out yourself. Visit the Hawaii Electronic Marriage and Civil Union Registration System by clicking that link near the bottom of the frequently asked questions page on marriages (governor.hawaii.gov/blog/marriage-in-hawaii/). The midnight oil will be burning on Oahu and at Maui phone lines. But Hilo and Kona numbers go live at 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., respectively.
Presumably on Kauai they’re keeping normal business hours. Yawn.
Burning through calories and wallets
Gut-busting turkey or door-busting deals? Clearly, lots of folks in Hawaii managed to have both, gathering with family and friends in gratitude on the Thanksgiving holiday and then hitting the sales for a shopping ritual that’s become an American tradition all its own.
And those speedy shoppers who managed to walk off some of those feast-fueled calories as they made the mad dash from store to store? Well, that’s all gravy.
