Walgreen Co. said Tuesday it plans to open its 15th Hawaii store at the Nuuanu Shopping Plaza later this summer or early fall.
The Deerfield, Ill.-based drugstore chain acquired the leasehold interest on the more than 20,000-square-foot neighborhood shopping center in 2008 and, after project delays, has redeveloped the site, including space for three or four small retailers, according to leasing agent Roger Lyons.
RadioShack, Territorial Savings Bank and Supercuts, which have long-term leases, reopened late last year at the complex, formerly known for The Hungry Lion restaurant.
Walgreens at 1613 Nuuanu Ave. will be the retailer’s ninth Oahu location since opening its first store in 2007 on the corner of Keeaumoku Street and Kapiolani Boulevard. Walgreen Co. also plans to open stores in Ewa Beach and in Lihue on Kauai, but hasn’t disclosed a time frame.
"As we continue to grow, we aspire to be Hawaii’s first choice for health and daily living needs," said Walgreen spokesman Robert Elfinger.
The company has previously said it invests about $5 million when building a typical 14,000-square-foot store from the ground up, and planned to open between 25 and 30 Hawaii stores. Each store typically employs between 20 and 25 employees.
