Tip helps sheriffs arrest dangerous felon
Tips from the public led to the arrest Thursday of a 34-year-old convicted felon, considered armed and dangerous and wanted by police and the state Sheriff Division.
Deputy sheriffs located Richard Kauvaka at 9:05 p.m. Thursday at School and Houghtailing streets in Kalihi after the state urged airlines to be on the lookout for him March 28 because he was reportedly a flight risk and is suspected of serious crimes.
Suspect allegedly claimed to be officer
A 36-year-old homeless man is in police custody, suspected of teaming up with another man to rob a couple while impersonating officers.
Police said the robbery occurred at 5 a.m. March 28 in the Punchbowl area. The two men allegedly rousted a couple sleeping in their car, claimed to be police officers, took their property and fled. The victims were a 44-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman.
One of the suspects was caught Wednesday and arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery and impersonation of a law enforcement officer. The other suspect is still being sought.

Prison sentence handed down for sex assaults
A 52-year-old man has been sentenced on Kauai for sexually assaulting a minor.
The Garden Island newspaper reported that Jonathan Espejo Reyes was sentenced Wednesday to two concurrent five-year prison terms as part of a plea deal.
Reyes was arraigned Aug. 13. The original charges included two counts of sexual assault against a minor, 15 counts of first-degree sexual assault and four counts of attempted first-degree sexual assault.
Prosecutors say the sexual assaults occurred in 2002.
Reyes pleaded no contest Jan. 2 to two counts of amended third-degree sexual assault.
County Deputy Prosecutor Lisa Arin says one consideration was to avoid putting the victim through the trauma of having to testify at a trial.
