Red Sox call up former UH pitcher Steven Wright

Former University of Hawaii pitcher Steven Wright was called up to the Boston Red Sox’s major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday.

Wright, 28, pitched three years for the Rainbows before he was taken in the second round of the 2006 MLB Draft (No. 56 overall) by the Cleveland Indians.

He spent six years in the minor leagues with the Indians before he was traded to the Red Sox organization in July 2012.

Wright was called up to replace Joel Hanrahan, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The last UH baseball alumnus to play in a regular season MLB game was Dusty Bergman with the Anaheim Angels in 2004.

Wright, who became a knuckleball pitcher in 2011, is 40-34 with a 3.89 ERA in 709 2/3 innings pitched in the minors.

He was 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in two starts for Pawtucket this season, allowing three runs in 10 inings with seven walks and 11 strikeouts.

Baseball America named Wright a second-team All-American after his junior season with the ‘Bows.

He is the first player to have played under Mike Trapasso to make the big leagues. Trapasso is in his 12th season as Hawaii’s baseball coach.
