Search for missing surfer ends
Fire and ocean safety personnel concluded their four-day search at dusk Saturday for missing Haleiwa surfer Kirk Passmore.
A 20-foot wave broke on top of the 32-year-old big-wave rider 11:20 a.m. Wednesday at Alligator Rock, a surf spot near Waimea Bay.
A high-surf warning was in effect Wednesday due to a north swell.
His surfboard, broken in half with its leash pulled out, was recovered at Chun’s Reef.
Passmore was co-owner of Three Stones, a Waialua surf shop, and a bartender at Banzai Sushi Bar in Haleiwa.
Passmore grew up in Carlsbad, Calif., and surfed in Mexico, Baja California, southern France and Mavericks in Northern California, according to family and friends.
The Coast Guard ended its search at sunset Friday.
