All ILH judo championships are different, but this one might be Dane Pestano’s favorite.

It might be because it is the Kamehameha senior’s fourth, completing a rare sweep. But mostly it will be remembered because it was won all in good fun.

The only thing that could have prevented Pestano from the feat was familiarity. Pestano matched up with training partner and classmate John Pane‘e and was pushed but ended up getting an underhook and grabbing the win. Both judoka were all smiles even as they were flying through the air.

"We practice with each other a lot; he knows everything I am going to do," Pestano said. "It was fun."

So Pestano goes into states looking for his fourth title there

"It’s pretty cool, actually," Pestano said. "I always wanted to win four ILH judo and four ILH wrestling, but I came short in the wrestling, so I have only judo left."

Team scores were not announced, but Kamehameha led the way with five girls champions and three boys champions.

Hiilani Meyer, Bree Rapoza, Teshya Alo, Abcde Zoller and Jaclyn Fontanilla had the haul for the Warriors. Rapoza always wins when she takes the mat and Alo might be next in line. The freshman beat Danielle Nakamoto of ‘Iolani for her first ILH crown, and is more than a little excited to compete at states for the first time. She won a preseason tournament against many of the girls she will meet there.

"I am confident, but we’ll see," Alo said. "Everybody is good though; they are all good."

Punahou’s Thai Ha Sloan waited all day to compete in her final, then took the mat for all of 35 seconds before throwing Kamehameha’s Kylie Leong to her back to end it, earning her second ILH crown.

Leong had Sloan on her back briefly before the top seed recovered.

Despite her many decorations in wrestling and judo over the years, Sloan will be going for her first state title next week. She says that has been driving her since wrestling ended.

"I need something to train for all the time, so I have been training for states for judo and I will be training for nationals for wrestling after that," Sloan said.

Ella Ito of Punahou joined Sloan as a champion, winning at 115 pounds. Taylor Miyao of St. Andrews and Alex Fautanu of ‘Iolani also won ILH titles, but Fuatanu ran unopposed.

In addition to Pestano, Jonah Hoshino and Joseph Hoshino won for the Kamehameha boys. Joseph Hoshino beat teammate Namakana Pakala for the 198 crown.

Top seeds ruled the day, with the expected outcome happening in eight of the 10 boys weight classes and five of the nine girls finals.

Top seeds to carry through were Jordan Ng of ‘Iolani, Weston Kogachi of Punahou, Brendan Chang of Maryknoll, four-time ILH champ Josh Terao of Mid-Pacific and Royce Mori and Jacob Lewis of Damien.

Evan Uehara of Punahou pulled the only other upset, beating top seed Erik Kawatchi of Island Pacific in the 155 final.
