Maui police look for driver in hit-and-run crash in Paia

Maui police are looking for the driver of a car in a fatal hit-and-run crash.

Police said a man’s body was found in the middle of Paia Bypass Road on Sunday night. He appears to have been struck by a vehicle traveling east that fled the scene.

The man’s identification was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Police believe the vehicle that hit him is a 1997 or 1998 Mitsubishi Galant with front-end damage. It is missing at least one of the black plastic grill pieces above the front license plate.

It was Maui County’s 19th traffic fatality this year, compared to 12 at the same time last year.
