Soldier charged with murder
A 40-year-old Army master sergeant accused of killing his wife in October in their Waikiki high-rise apartment will be arraigned in Circuit Court on Monday.
Master Sgt. Leonardo Chavez was charged with second-degree murder in the Oct. 28 death of his wife, Tara Isnin, 33. He was charged Tuesday after being released from Tripler Army Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized since he allegedly tried to kill himself. He was also charged with a weapons offense.
Chavez had been in the Army hospital recovering from a gunshot wound to his right cheek that occurred in an apparent suicide attempt after he killed his wife, police said.
The bail for Chavez, 40, from the Dominican Republic, is $1 million. Police transferred Chavez from the Beretania Street cellblock to Oahu Community Correctional Center on Wednesday.
Isnin, 33, from Singapore, died from brain injuries caused by multiple gunshot wounds to the head, according to the Honolulu medical examiner.
Man held on assault charge
A 19-year-old Ewa Beach man was charged with allegedly assaulting his girlfriend during an argument in July.
Mark Ramos was arrested Tuesday and charged the same day with second-degree assault. His bail was set at $30,000.
Police said the alleged assault occurred July 4 during an argument when the suspect allegedly struck the 17-year-old girl.
