Eastern Washington’s hot streak stopped the Hawaii women’s soccer team cold.
The Rainbow Wahine dropped back-to-back matches for the first time this season after a 2-1 loss to the Eagles on Sunday at Cheney, Wash.
UH scrambled to within a goal late in the match after senior Christy Watanabe’s second career score in the 84th minute on an assist from Chelsea Miyake. But the Wahine (5-3-2) got no clean looks in the final 6 minutes besides a Miyake corner kick.
After entering its Washington trip on a seven-match unbeaten streak, UH came away empty twice and fell to 1-3 on the road this season. It is 2-15 in its last 17 mainland matches.
"It was really, really tough," UH coach Michele Nagamine said. "Everybody’s exhausted. Those closing minutes we just pressed and pressed and pressed. We definitely had the momentum. We just couldn’t put it away."
Senior goalkeeper Kanani Taaca recorded a season-high eight saves, but Eastern Washington (3-4-1) of the Big Sky Conference won its third straight by placing 12 of its 17 shots on goal. The Eagles scored late in the first half and early in the second.
The Wahine attempted 16 shots, but only four were on goal. Watanabe took a match-high seven shots and scored for the second time in three matches.
UH sophomore forward Tiana Fujimoto played through a calf and ankle injury that flared up in Friday’s 2-0 loss at Washington State. She had one of her four shots hit off the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
UH now returns home for its annual alumnae exhibition game on Sunday.
