Agencies to keep looking for surfer
The Honolulu Fire Department plans to resume the search for missing surfer Kirk Passmore today.
No trace of Passmore was found Friday as authorities conducted helicopter and jet ski searches, Honolulu fire spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said.
The Coast Guard suspended its search at sunsetFriday near Alligator Rock. "It is with heavy hearts that we now suspend our active search efforts," said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, commanding officer for Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. "Our thoughts go out to the Passmore family and the tightknit communities in both Hawaii and California where he was an important member."
The Coast Guard, Honolulu FireDepartment and OceanSafetysearched more than 2,330 square miles.
Passmore, 32, disappeared before noon Wednesday after he tried riding a 20-foot wave.
Search in ocean for woman on hold
The Coast Guard and cruise liner Grand Princess have suspended the search for the 54-year-old passenger who is believed to have jumped off the vessel hundreds of miles northeast of Hilo. The vessel will dock at Honolulu Harbor today.
Princess Cruises in a written statement Friday said the 950-foot, 17-story vessel searched for the woman for 32 hours after she was seen jumping off the ship Wednesday. The cruise liner left the search area at 9 p.m. Thursday and headed toward Honolulu.
The ship canceled a port call at Nawiliwili Harbor.
The Coast Guard announced Friday afternoon that it was suspending its search by airplane, noting that it has covered 10,000 square miles of ocean.
