Mayor Kirk Caldwell, city officials and urban plannning consultants will lead a daylong symposium today on transit-oriented development in Honolulu, and efforts to make local neighborhoods more walkable and user-friendly without cars.

The event, running 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center, is free and open to the public. Residents will have a chance to offer input on how areas that will surround future rail transit stations should look. Paid parking and street parking will be available.

Those who can’t attend can still offer input via online social media — by taking photos of buildings, streets, parks and other features they’d like to see near a rail station and posting it to Twitter, Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #todhonoluluwishes and a caption.
