LINCOLN INSPIRES VOYAGERS: Dean Campbell, 78, right, and his son, Dave, 50, started the last leg of a seven-day journey from Beardstown, Ill., to St. Louis on Friday by leaving Alton, Ill., and heading downstream on the Mississippi River. The men were traveling in a canoe made from a large cottonwood tree that Campbell carved only with hand tools. Fourteen people, two at a time, have helped make the journey, with the Campbells anchoring the last leg of the trip. Campbell, of Springfield, Ill., got the idea for the canoe while working as a tour guide at the Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield. Abraham Lincoln reportedly made his way to Springfield, at least in part, by waterways using a hand-carved canoe.
