Deputy sheriffs captured a 45-year-old woman Thursday after she allegedly attempted to escape from Honolulu District Court while her legs were shackled.
Elloise Ysaol was to have been arraigned before Judge Lono Lee on a charge of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. Honolulu police arrested her the night before.
Before the arraignment, at about 2:25 p.m., Ysaol — described as 5 feet 2 inches tall and 130 pounds — and five other females were being moved by deputy sheriffs in the seventh-floor hallway of District Court when Ysaol allegedly bolted.
Toni Schwartz, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety, said Ysaol then fled through an emergency exit door in a secured area between the holding cells and the courtrooms. Deputy sheriffs secured the building while they conducted a search.
She was found in the stairwell of the 11th floor at about 3 p.m.
An attempted-escape charge is pending.
Last month Ysaol was convicted of fourth-degree theft, a petty misdemeanor.
An escape from Circuit Court occurred two months ago.
On the morning of Feb. 20, more than 50 state sheriffs and Honolulu police officers conducted a search after Teddy Munet, 29, charged with second-degree murder in connection with the 2012 death of William "Billy" Fallau, fled from corrections officers behind the court building while handcuffed.
He was in a van carrying eight inmates and two corrections officers. Munet bolted while officers were unloading the van.
Unlike Ysaol, his legs were not shackled. More than 11 hours later, Honolulu police captured Munet several blocks away on Waimanu Street after they received a tip from a 911 call.
