Officer’s duties restricted after DUI arrest
Honolulu Police Lt. Colin Wong, arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant last weekend in Waikiki, will be placed on restricted duty in the Police Department’s Specialized Services Division.
Wong was arrested in Waikiki at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday after allegedly hitting a parked car near the Modern Honolulu Hotel on Ala Moana Boulevard.
He was released after posting $1,000 in bail.
Wong has been with the Police Department for 27 years.
Northern winds bring record lows to isles
People in Hawaii are donning sweaters and long-sleeve shirts as winds from the north send temperatures to record lows. The temperature at Honolulu Airport dropped to 61 degrees Tuesday morning, below the date’s previous record of 62 degrees set in 2002.
The lowest temperature ever recorded in Honolulu is 52 degrees, marked Jan. 20, 1969.
It’s also cold on Hawaii island, where thousands are gathering this week for the annual Merrie Monarch Festival celebrating hula and Hawaiian culture.
Temperatures dipped to 58 degrees at Hilo Airport on Tuesday morning, lower than the previous record of 60 degrees set in 1953.
Hilo hit an all-time low of 53 degrees Feb. 21, 1962.
Repairs set off Big Isle sirens
Emergency sirens across Hawaii island were inadvertently activated shortly before noon Tuesday while technicians were repairing the Hawaii Island Tsunami Warning Siren system, the Police Department said.
No emergency existed. The Police Department apologized for any inconvenience or confusion caused by the sounding.
Crimes result in 10-year term
Kauai Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe on Monday sentenced a Hanamaulu man to 10 years in prison for a three-month crime spree in 2011.
Pohaku Matsuura, 35, also was ordered to stay away from the Lihue Christian Church, ‘Ae Kamali‘i Preschool and Kauai Palms Hotel.
Between July and September 2011, Matsuura broke into an unattended vehicle, a preschool and rooms at various hotels islandwide, police said. He then used the checks and credit cards he stole to make purchases at Walmart, Prestige Jewelers and other merchants.
Matsuura was arrested in September 2011. On Dec. 26, 2012, he pleaded guilty to 20 Class C felonies, one Class B felony and two misdemeanors.
Matsuura has three felony convictions in addition to numerous misdemeanor convictions, including a one-year prison sentence in 1996 for promoting a dangerous drug. In 1998 he was sentenced to a five-year term for second-degree theft.
