In 2010, Pacific (Ore.) fielded its first football team in nearly 20 years with a strong Hawaii presence.
On Saturday, the program achieved an important milestone with its first road victory — a 27-6 win over Occidental (Calif.) College in Los Angeles.
Twenty-nine players who graduated from Hawaii high schools fill the Boxers roster, with many playing significant roles in the win.
Quarterback P.J. Minaya, who threw for 45 touchdowns as a senior for Pac-Five in 2009 and holds the state record with 511 passing yards in a single game, got his first start in more than a year.
He finished 17-for-31 for 207 yards and a touchdown — a 46-yard pass to Darin Kamealoha, his teammate in high school.
“It was like bringing back the high school days,” Minaya said on Tuesday. “It was rewarding (to start) and felt good.”
Minaya started in place of T.C. Campbell, a 2010 Kamehameha alumnus, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first game of the season.
The Boxers were dealt another blow when reigning first-team, All-Northwest Conference receiver Jordan Fukumoto (Saint Louis ’10) left the field on a stretcher in the second quarter with a leg injury.
Kamealoha picked up the slack, finishing with four catches for 84 yards and Kelson Kawai (Kohala ’10) had five catches for 49 yards.
Defensively, the Boxers were led by junior lineman Landon Aano (Kamehameha ’10), who had three sacks. Kamu Morita (Kamehameha ’10) had five solo tackles and Kasey Dukes (Leilehua ’10) and Trey Kodama (Kamehameha ’12) each added four tackles apiece.
After finishing 0-9 in 2010, Pacific went 1-8 last year for its first football victory in 20 years. Minaya expects the team to be much improved this season. “Things are coming together,” he said. “It was a good experience building up a program. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to come here.”
