Seventy Hawaii high school seniors from 14 schools have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2013, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. said in an announcement scheduled for release today.

‘Iolani School has 31 semifinalists, and Punahou School, 20.

The program named about 16,000 semifinalists in its 58th annual scholarship program. Semifinalists will continue in the competition for about 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring.

There are 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships, about 1,000 corporate-sponsored awards provided by about 240 corporations and business organizations, and about 4,800 awards sponsored by about 200 universities for seniors who will attend the sponsor institution.
