Conference season starts Wednesday
Chaminade hosts Hawaii Pacific on Wednesday in the Pacific West Conference volleyball season opener for the Hawaii schools.
The match between the Silverswords (3-4) and Sea Warriors (5-2) begins at 7 p.m. at McCabe Gym.
No. 15 Brigham Young-Hawaii (5-2) opens its PacWest title defense Saturday against Chaminade at 7 p.m. at McCabe Gym. Hawaii-Hilo (0-6) hosts HPU on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the campus gym.
The PacWest has expanded to 14 teams this season, with the addition of Azusa Pacific, Fresno Pacific, Point Loma and Holy Names. It is the largest D-II conference in the country.
Seasiders move up in volleyball poll
Three wins equaled moving up one spot for Brigham-Hawaii in the AVCA Division II coaches poll. The Seasiders went from No. 16 to No. 15 on Monday.
PacWest rival Grand Canyon (10-0) jumped from 24th to 12th after an impressive showing at the Crossroads Classic hosted by Colorado Mesa last week.
Guerpo, Reyes at Vulcan luncheon
Hawaii-Hilo cross country coach Jaime Guerpo and Tino Reyes, women’s volleyball coach, are the featured speakers at today’s noon Vulcan Athletic Club luncheon at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort.
Guerpo is in his 14th season with the Vulcans, and Reyes is in his third season.

HPU’s Hall of Fame induction is Sept. 28
Former head softball coach Howard Okita and men’s basketball coach Tony Sellitto, who both won national championships in their respective sports, headline Hawaii Pacific’s second Hall of Fame class that will be inducted Sept. 28.
The two coaches are joined by: All-America setter Gaby Artigas, who helped the Sea Warriors to the 1990 NAIA title; three-time All-America cross country runner Nina Christensen; and Mikael Maatta, a seven-time All-American in tennis who helped the Sea Warriors advance to the NCAA final in 2001 and 2003.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction and cocktails at Aloha Tower’s Pier 10. Dinner by Chai’s Island Bistro is at 6:30 p.m.
