2 killed, 5 injured in Big Isle car accident
Hawaii County police are investigating a motor vehicle accident that left two women dead and five other people seriously injured.
The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on Route 19 near Honokaa when a Nissan truck reportedly overtook a van heading south, forcing the van off the road. Both vehicles veered off the road and down a 15-foot embankment, according to a Hawaii County Fire Department spokesman.
Two women in the van were pronounced dead at the scene. Five other people, also believed to have been in the van, were transported in serious condition to North Hawaii Community Hospital and Hilo Medical Center, the spokesman said. Four other people involved in the collision were uninjured.
Police arrested the male driver of the truck on suspicion of negligent homicide.
Police closed the highway in both directions following the crash.
Police, victim track alleged phone thief
Honolulu police recovered a cellphone and arrested a suspect who allegedly stole the device, left under a towel while a 29-year-old man took a shower at the Kakaako shoreline recreation area Sunday.
Police said the man discovered that the phone was gone at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday and used his GPS tracking system on his iPad to locate the phone.
Patrol officers were able to find a 43-year-old man with the victim’s cellphone at about 12:25 p.m., police said. Officers arrested the suspect for investigation of detaining stolen property and second-degree theft.
Police release details on bank suspect
Honolulu police have released a photo and description of a man suspected of robbing the Kailua branch of Hawaii National Bank on Friday afternoon.
Police described the man as between 20 and 30 years old, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, between 140 and 150 pounds and having wavy dirty-blond hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt, blue denim pants, slippers and sunglasses.
The man walked into the bank at 21 Aulike St. just before 4:30 p.m., handed a demand note and got away on foot with an undisclosed amount of money, police said. It was unclear whether he was armed.

Motorcyclist killed in crash ID’d as Kapolei man
The Honolulu medical examiner’s office has identified the motorcyclist killed in a crash Sunday in Ewa Villages as Elcid Cabangon, 45, of Kapolei.
Medical examiners have classified the death as an accident, although toxicology results are pending.
Witnesses said the motorcycle may have been speeding.
Police said Cabangon was driving a 2010 Yamaha motorcycle west on Kapolei Parkway when it went out of control, crossed a grassy median and continued into the path of a 2001 Ford F-150 truck traveling in the opposite direction about two-tenths of a mile east of Renton Road at about 12:20 p.m.
Cabangon was wearing a helmet, police said.
Cabangon’s death was the 45th on Oahu roads so far this year, compared with 39 at this time a year ago. It was the 14th involving a motorcycle victim.
Drunk man accused of punching father
An intoxicated 36-year-old Pearl City man allegedly punched his 77-year-old father Sunday morning in Kunia, police said.
Police arrested the suspect at his home on 2nd Street in Pearl City at 6:08 p.m.
Police said the man punched his father several times just after midnight. The victim was treated at a local hospital for a broken nose and swollen eyes, police said.
