Volunteers and workers gathered in Waianae Wednesday to plant up to 20 very rare native Hawaiian nanu (Gardenia brighamii) plants that they cultivated from the last remaining nanu growing wild on Oahu. Susan Ching, the Oahu plant coordinator for the Plant Extinction Prevention Program, places a nanu plant in a fenced-off protected area. Pictured at top is the flower of the Gardenia brighamii plant.
