Halfway through the OIA Red West regular season, there’s no clear-cut favorite.
No. 8 Mililani bounced back from a loss to Leilehua last week with a 45-26 victory over previously unbeaten Campbell on Friday night to create a log jam atop the league standings.
The Trojans (4-1, 2-1) moved into a tie with the ninth-ranked Sabers (4-1,
2-1) for the league lead after Aiea beat Leilehua to move both teams into a tie for third at 1-1.
Campbell fell short of its first 5-0 start since 1997.
Mililani quarterback Jarin Morikawa threw for 268 yards and accounted for four touchdowns as Mililani took a 29-0 halftime lead and held on for its fifth victory in its past six meetings against the Sabers.
"It was important for us to bounce back from such a tough loss," Mililani coach Rod York said. "Campbell is a tough team and we’ll see them again."
The Sabers outscored the Trojans 26-16 in the second half but couldn’t overcome an ugly first half in which they accounted for only 87 total yards.
"Like I told my kids, it was the first we were ever down this much, and what I told them is be thankful there’s another half and when we watch film (today) I don’t want to see anyone walking around," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "We established some things in the second half, but it was too late and the game was over."
Campbell quarterback Justin Tago-Su’e surpassed the 200-yard mark for the fourth time in his career, finishing 14-for-28 for 202 yards and two touchdowns, including one rushing.
Mililani’s up-tempo offense put Campbell’s defense on its heels from the game’s opening play.
Morikawa completed 11 of his first 13 throws as the Trojans put up 15 quick points in the first quarter.
"It was a good bounce-back win for us," Morikawa said. "We were able to learn from it, and I think our team responded well."
Morikawa needed just five plays to move Mililani 60 yards on its first drive, which ended on a 29-yard screen pass to Dayton Furuta.
KK Padello recorded one of Mililani’s three first-half sacks to stall Campbell’s first drive, and Mililani was back on the offensive.
Three different pass-interference penalties helped Mililani run 18 plays on its next drive before Morikawa plowed into the end zone on a quarterback sneak for a 15-0 advantage.
"There was a drive where they took up about 10 minutes, and that kind of hurt us," Amosa said.
The Sabers tried a fake punt deep in their own territory after another drive stalled out, and Mililani took control once again as Morikawa found Kainoa Wilson for a 10-yard score.
The two hooked up one last time in the half as Wilson hauled in a 16-yard TD with 4.7 seconds left to give Mililani a 29-0 halftime lead.
Morikawa, who had a hand in all four scores, finished the half 16-for-26 for 176 yards, connecting with seven different receivers.
Campbell pulled within two scores at 32-20 before Furuta scored on his second touchdown of the game to put Mililani back up by 19.
The Trojans then recovered an onside kick and put the game away with a 5-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Ryan Reedy.
