Suyetsugu qualifies for LPGA second stage
Hawaii’s Xyra Suyetsugu shot 1-under-par 71 in Friday’s final round of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament first stage in Florida. She finished in a tie for 30th, advancing to the second stage next month in Florida.
Suyetsugu’s 72-hole total was 1-over 289. The top 60 and ties moved on, with the cut coming at 295.
Medalist was Moriya Jutanugarn, an 18-year-old from Thailand, who shot 70—273 at LPGA International.
The top 70 and ties from the second stage advance to the final Qualifying Tournament, a 90-hole event Nov. 28-Dec. 2 on LPGA International’s Champions and Legends Courses.
Top finishers in the final stage earn 2013 LPGA membership and all others who make the cut receive Symetra Tour status. Suyetsugu, a Roosevelt graduate, turned pro after graduating from the University of Hawaii. She joined the Symetra Tour last year.
UH baseball team 13th in attendance
The University of Hawaii baseball team finished this past season ranked 13th nationally in home attendance and first in the West Region.
According to UH, the Rainbows averaged 3,340 per game (116,909 for 35 home games), UH’s highest in six years.
"This is a testament to the great fans we have in Hawaii and how they support our program," UH coach Mike Trapasso said in a statement released by UH. The Rainbows concluded the 2012 season with a 30-25 record.
BYUH women win in volleyball
Senior outside Stella Chen hammered 13 kills to lead the Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s volleyball team (4-2) to a 25-20, 25-13, 25-16 win over Alaska-Fairbanks at the Cannon Activities Center on Friday.
On Thursday, Chen had 16 kills as BYUH beat Saint Martin’s 25-18, 24-26, 25-12, 25-11. Michelle Chen had 39 assists, 16 digs, five blocks, seven service aces and three kills.
HPU beats Saint Martin’s in volleyball
Samantha Rummans had 12 kills and Pihanakealoha Kea had 33 assists to lift the Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team (4-2) to a 26-24, 25-21, 25-9 victory over Saint Martin’s in the Hawaii Invitational on Friday at St. Andrew’s Priory.
On Thursday, Sanoe Recca put down 15 kills and Kea passed out 32 assists in the four-set loss to Western Oregon. The scores were 25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 26-24, with the Sea Warriors holding leads in the first (22-18) and fourth (20-18) sets before falling.
Western Oregon beat Chaminade (2-4) on Friday at McCabe Gym by scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-16.
Southern Arkansas outlasts UH-Hilo
Courtney Smith had 19 kills as Southern Arkansas kept the University of Hawaii-Hilo women’s volleyball team winless at 0-5 with a 23-25, 14-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-5 win at Hilo on Friday. Jolie Au had 34 assists for UHH.
BYUH women’s soccer team wins
Kim Micheletti scored in the 54th minute to lift the Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s soccer team (2-1) over Western Oregon 1-0 at the Waipio Soccer Stadium on Thursday.
HPU men, women lose in soccer
Justin Moore scored in the 25th minute as Western Washington beat the Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team (0-2) 1-0 in Bellingham, Wash., on Friday.
