PAGO PAGO, American Samoa >> American Samoa’s election office says there’s not enough money to run the territory’s general election because of a high number of candidates.

Chief Election Officer Soliai Tuipine Fuimaono says an additional $240,000 is needed.

According to budget documents, only $200,000 has been allocated operate and manage the Nov. 6 general election.

A run-off is held two weeks after the general election if a gubernatorial team doesn’t garner 50 percent plus one of votes.

Fuimaono expects a run-off in the governor’s race, which has six candidates.

He says the total cost to operate the election is $440,000, with $280,500 for the general election and $159,500 for the run-off.

Five candidates are running for the nonvoting delegate seat in Congress, while about 60 are vying for the local House of Representatives.
