UH soccer team earns draw at Long Beach State
Hawaii freshman goalkeeper Monk Berger set the school record for shutouts in a season in UH’s double-overtime 0-0 draw at Long Beach State Sunday.
Berger saved five shots and coaxed a miss on a 49ers penalty kick in the 69th minute for her sixth solo shutout. The previous season record was five, shared by three keepers.
"That was pretty scary. When they called the PK, everyone put their head down like the game was over," Berger said. "But it went off the post and out, and Karli Look cleared it. She saved my butt."
UH (7-7-1, 2-3-1 Big West) was outshot 17-8 but held firm against LBSU (8-5-2, 2-1-2) this time. It was the third straight year the Rainbow Wahine played at Long Beach; the previous two went 3-0 and 5-0 to the 49ers.
The Rainbow Wahine remain in contention for a BWC tournament berth with two home games remaining. Their next date at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium is Thursday against UC Irvine.
