‘Iolani School names new dean of studies
Karen Neitzel will join ‘Iolani School as its new dean of studies July 1.
Neitzel is principal of Hood River Valley High School in Hood River, Ore., said ‘Iolani Head of School Timothy R. Cottrell. She recently established a Hood River Valley sister school in Xi’an, China, and was selected to represent Oregon in the 2012-2013 U.S. China Administrator Shadow Project.
Prior to Hood River Valley, Neitzel was at the Archer School for Girls in Los Angeles, where she served as assistant head of school after being promoted from academic dean and director of technology.
Neitzel earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California at San Diego, a master’s degree in education from California State Dominguez Hills and a doctorate in educational leadership from UC-Irvine. She earned her high school diploma from the International School of Brussels.

Kids can apply to be lifeguards on Garden Isle
Youth ages 8 to 17 may apply beginning May 1 for the Kauai County Junior Lifeguard and Keiki Lifeguard programs.
The Junior Lifeguard Program is open to youth ages 13 to 17 years who can swim and run 100 yards nonstop. Five weeklong sessions will begin June 3, 17 and 24 and July 8 and 15.
The Keiki Lifeguard Program is available to children ages 8 to 12 who can swim and run 50 yards nonstop. Three weeklong sessions will begin June 3 and 17 and July 15.
Registration is limited to 50 participants per session. There is no charge.
Applications can be picked up at any lifeguard tower and at the Kauai Fire Department headquarters at the Lihue Civic Center Piikoi Building, 4444 Rice St., Suite 315. A copy of the applicant’s birth certificate must be attached to the completed registration form.

Ethical lapses lead to lawyer being disbarred
A Maui attorney has been disbarred because of multiple ethical violations in 14 cases.
The Hawaii Supreme Court order regarding Steven Songstad takes effect May 17.
The Maui News reported that the state Office of Disciplinary Counsel has ordered Songstad to pay restitution of more than $18,000 for misappropriating client funds.
Songstad has represented clients in both civil and criminal cases. The 66-year-old lawyer was admitted to the Hawaii bar Oct. 17, 1975.
