Joint venture for Molokai canoe races
The Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai race committees are joining forces for the first time in an effort to strengthen and promote what is considered the world championship of outrigger canoe competition, the crossings of the Kaiwi Channel.
"While we have always helped each other’s race over the years, we felt it important to pull all of our resources together to put on the premier outrigger canoe races in the world," said Hannie Anderson, race director and co-founder of the women’s event, Na Wahine O Ke Kai.
Organizers expect an international field of more than 200 crews and 2,000 paddlers for the two 41-mile races, which begin at Hale O Lono Harbor, Molokai, and finish at Duke Kahanamoku Beach on Oahu.
Registration and information for the 35th Na Wahine O Ke Kai, scheduled for Sept. 22, is available online at nawahineokekai.com. The first women’s race was held in 1979 and has run annually except for 1980, when marine conditions forced its cancellation. The men’s Molokai Hoe, first run in 1952, is scheduled for Oct. 13. Registration and information is available online at molokaihoe.com.
McCully wins state AJA baseball title
Waylen Sing Chow and Kip Masuda each drove in two runs in an eight-run fourth inning as McCully rallied past Maui champion Daimyo 20-15 for the championship of the 78th AJA State Baseball Tournament on Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium.
Sing Chow finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and hit .833 for the tournament en route to being named the batting champion. MVP honors went to Ridge Carpenter of McCully, the Oahu champion.
Maui’s Van Delos Santos took the RBI title with six, including three on a homer in the top of the fourth of the championship game that gave the Daimyo a brief 9-6 lead.
In the consolation game, Onan Masaoka struck out eight and the Keaukaha Warriors topped the Kalaheo Farmers 16-5 in a game called after five innings due to the time limit. The Hawaii island champs scored all of their runs in the first two innings, including 10 in the second. Alton Penrose led Keaukaha with four RBIs, while Robbie Correa had a grand slam in the fifth for the Kauai champions.
