Abraham Silva and Tyler Taumua took their healthy competition at tailback to a new level on Saturday night.
After Silva scored on an 80-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the second half, Taumua took his next touch 54 yards to the house as No. 2 Farrington rolled Kaimuki 52-0 in an OIA Red East game at Kaiser.
Silva finished with 176 yards on only 10 carries and Taumua totaled a season-high 113 yards on the ground as the Governors started the season 4-0 for the third time in the past four years.
"We knew Kaimuki was short-handed with some guys, so we just wanted to make sure we played our game and not get complacent," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said.
The Govs (4-0, 2-0) scored touchdowns on five of their first six drives to take a 32-0 lead into the break.
Silva capped a 10-play drive to start the game with a 5-yard scoring run and Taumua found the end zone from 10 yards out to put Farrington ahead 14-0 midway through the first quarter.
Sophomore quarterback Montana Liana hooked up with Francis Evangelia for a 21-yard touchdown late in the first quarter and Silva and Taumua flip-flopped TDs again in the second quarter for a 32-0 lead.
The Bulldogs (0-4, 0-2) drove inside the Farrington 20-yard line late in the half, but quarterback Zac Bastatas was sacked by senior Vaoatea Sagapolu with 5 seconds left.
Bastatas, who was 3-for-11 for 30 yards and an interception, was injured on the play and did not return.
"That’s why I wanted to apologize," Sagapolu said. "We were just trying to get our rips in and trying to get better for our next team we have to challenge."
Silva’s day ended on Farrington’s second drive of the second half when he raced down the sideline for an 80-yard touchdown to put the Govs ahead 39-0.
Taumua followed with his third score of the game.
"I had a talk with (Silva) on the side and I was like, ‘Oh OK, I got to catch up with you now,’ " said Taumua, whose day wasn’t done just yet.
Last year’s leading rusher in the OIA played a series as the backup quarterback, failing to complete his only pass attempt.
Taumua played some QB on the JV team and took "a few" reps last season, according to his coach.
"We’re trying to find a backup quarterback, so we put (Taumua) in and we put (Setefano Lavatai)," Okimoto said. "(Taumua and Silva) are two guys that basically try to do as much as they can when they’re on the field."
Lavatai played the final series and scored on a 60-yard touchdown run for the final margin.
Farrington finished with 435 total rushing yards.
