Man held over raft of offenses
Honolulu police arrested a 36-year-old man Tuesday on suspicion of kidnapping, abuse, terroristic threatening and other crimes stemming from a pair of confrontations with his ex-girlfriend.
According to police, the woman attempted to break up with the suspect on July 12 and the suspect responded by punching her repeatedly, choking her with a piece of cloth and threatening to kill her.
The woman escaped but was confronted by the suspect again on Aug. 21. The victim, a 28-year-old woman, told police that the man drove her around Waimanalo in a van, beat her with sticks and again threatened to kill her.
Police investigating a report of an argument found the suspect and victim in the van, but the suspect evaded capture by fleeing on foot. Police later determined the van was an unreported stolen vehicle.
On Tuesday, an officer involved in the stop recognized the suspect while responding to a traffic call. The officer arrested the man after a brief struggle.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, kidnapping, felony and misdemeanor abuse of a household or family member, terroristic threatening, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and resisting arrest.
