A 26-foot sailboat that sank Sunday off the Elks Club in Waikiki was removed Tuesday from the reef by a salvage company.

Department of Land and Natural Resources spokeswoman Deborah Ward said Sea Engineering used floats to lift the boat to the surface, then used a crane to lift pieces of it onto a barge.

The boat was taken to Pier 26 where it will be inspected by the DLNR’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation and later disposed of by the contractor. The cost of removal to the state is estimated at $21,750.

DLNR was notified of the boat Friday between 80 and 100 yards from shore in 12- to 14-foot deep water. The anchor line was wrapped around live coral and rock, causing concern for reef damage.

The Maui boat owner, Michael Perez-Peers, was notified to remove the vessel.

DLNR said enforcement officers are continuing to investigate the sinking. It was previously moored in Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor, but had left Aug. 16 after a temporary mooring permit expired in June.
