The state Health Department is warning people to stay out of the water in the area of South King Street and Kalakaua Avenue due to sewage contamination.

The broken pipe fronting 1621 Anapuni Street in Makiki leaked 4,400 gallons of untreated sewage into a concrete channel leading to the Ala Wai Canal. 

The City’s Department of Environmental Services said it received a call about the broken 8-inch clay pipe at 7:06 a.m. Friday. 

About 100 gallons of the wastewater dissipated into the ground, the rest entered the channel, officials said.

The flow was stopped, the area was cleaned, disinfected and deodorized, and warning signs were posted.

Both the city and state issued warnings to the public to stay out of the channel until the warning signs are removed. Water sampling was also being conducted.
