Paraglider, 64, hurt in landing
A Kula woman was injured Sunday morning while trying to land her paraglider on Haleakala, a Maui County news release said.
An ambulance crew from Kula arrived at Crater Road at about 10:20 a.m. to find the woman, 64, lying next to her gear.
She said a gust of wind picked up her paraglider as she was landing and dropped her 30 feet to the ground.
She suffered injuries to her upper extremities and was taken in serious but stable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, the county said.
Pot arrests drop after initiative
Marijuana arrests have declined on Hawaii island since a 2008 law passed by voter initiative made adult use of marijuana on private property the "lowest law enforcement priority."
Citing a semiannual police report to the County Council, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported there were 22 arrests for commercial promotion of marijuana between Nov. 1 and April 30, down from 72 for the previous six months.
The number marked the fewest arrests for commercial promotion in a six-month period since voters passed the so-called "Peaceful Sky Initiative" on Nov. 4, 2008.
According to the report filed May 30 with County Council Chairman Dominic Yagong, 1,465 adults were arrested on various marijuana charges between Nov. 4, 2008, and April 30.
Of those, 670, or 45.7 percent, were Caucasians, who account for 33.7 percent of the population. Another 373 arrests, or 25.4 percent, were Native Hawaiians, who account for 8.5 percent, the report said.
