Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota looks for a receiver during the first half of their intra-squad spring NCAA college football game in Eugene

Saint Louis School graduate Marcus Mariota will be the first freshman to start a season opener at quarterback for the University of Oregon in 21 years, the school announced.

Mariota, a redshirt freshman, will open against Arkansas State Sept. 1 in Eugene’s Autzen Stadium for the fifth-ranked Ducks.

The last freshman to start a season opener for the Ducks was redshirt freshman Danny O’Neil in 1991 against Washington State.

Mariota, a 6-foot, 4-inch, 211 pounder, beat out sophomore Bryan Bennett for the job.
