Maui rancher pleads guilty to wildlife hunt charges

A Maui rancher pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday morning to illegally selling Axis deer and Mouflon cross-bred sheep by letting a person without a hunting license hunt the animals on his ranch.

The hunter turned out to be an undercover agent for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service who paid the rancher $1,200 for the hunt.

Jeffrey Scott Grundhauser, 53, owner of Arrow One Ranch in Kula, faces a maximum one-year jail term and $100,000 fine when he is sentenced in October.

His friend and neighbor, helicopter pilot Thomas Leroy Hauptman, admitted Monday to illegally transporting Axis deer to Maui from Hawaii Island and transporting Mouflon cross-bred sheep to Hawaii Island to Maui.
