Moanalua’s Hara on a winning streak
Moanalua sophomore Kyosuke Hara captured his second tournament in as many months, parring the final hole Sunday to win the 11th annual Turtle Bay Amateur by one shot over Manoa Cup champion Jared Sawada.
Hara, who claimed the Mayor’s Cuplast month, was the first-round leader after a 2-under-par 70 at the Palmer Course Saturday. He and Sawada played the first nine at the Fazio Course in 2 under Sunday. Sawada, a former University of Hawaii golfer, took a two-shot advantage into the final hole, which he triple-bogeyed to shoot 71. Hara parred for 71 and the one-shot win.
Andrew Chin shot the day’s low round — 69 — to take third at 143.
Brian Pang (78—154) captured A flight in a playoff against Steve Mickle. Stanley Fujimoto (79—160) won a playoff with Reyn Sugitaya to take B flight. George Akeo (74—156) claimed C flight.
Fink’s 68 good for second place
Two-time Manoa Cup champ David Fink, a senior at Oregon State, fired a final-round 68 Tuesday and finished second — by a shot — at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, at Sonoma Golf Club in California.
Fink, 13th last week at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, shot 69-67 Monday and ended up at 12-under-par 204. The medalist was Cal senior Joel Stalter, who opened with a 64. Fink’s 67 equaled his career low.
Cal had three players in the top four and won the team title of its own event for the seventh time, with a 54-hole total of 825. UC Davis, of the Big West, was next at 847 and OSU took third at 850.
Hawaii was last in the 16-team event with a score of 298—895. The Rainbow Warriors were led by senior Tommy Yamashita (77—222), who tied for 53rd. Nainoa Calip (76—223) was another shot back.
Freshman Skye Inakoshi and senior David Saka shot 73 in the final round. Inakoshi tied for 64th, at 225. Saka did not play the second round because of illness. Sophomore Scotty Yamashita shot 76—229.
Akagi-Bustin makes Junior Cup team
Zoey Akagi-Bustin clinched a place on Hawaii’s Asia Pacific Junior Cup team Sunday, winning the Girls 15-18 title at the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association’s Kiahuna Junior Classic.
Akagi-Bustin fired 75 both days on Kauai to win by six shots over Randi Kim and Andi Igawa. Justin Ngan closed with a 73 to claim the oldest boys flight with a two-day total of 150.
Akagi-Bustin’s Asia-Pacific teammates will be Kristen Le, Alanis Sakuma, Keilyn Ing, Kimberlie Miyamoto, Aiko Leong, Tyler Munetake, PJ Samiere, John Oda, Ariel Elftman-Hanson, Keegan Loo, Kyle Suppa, Shawn Lu, Spencer Dunaway, Remington Hirano and Ngan.
Kiahuna was the last HSJGA tournament for juniors to earn a spot on the Cup team and in the Michelle Wie HSJGA Tournament of Champions, Dec. 14-15 at Wailea Emerald.
The Cup matches teams from Hawaii and Japan in a Ryder-Cup style competition. It will be Nov. 3-5 at Waikoloa Kings’, with four-ball matches the first day, foursomes the second and singles the third.
A Junior Am is Nov. 2 at the Kings’, with juniors joining amateurs for a tournament that helps raise funds for a scholarship program established by Hilton Grand Vacations. To enter, call the HSJGA at 532-0559.
The younger Kiahuna winners last weekend were Maui’s Jordan Terada (85—169) in Boys 11-12, and MinJae Kang (79—153) and Kauai’s Hi‘ilani Alana (98—189) in 13-14s.
Laszlo wins Oahu junior invitational
At the Oahu Junior Golf Association Ewa Beach/Mililani Golf Clubs’ Invitational over the weekend, Colin Laszlo opened with an even-par 72 and ran away with the boys’ oldest age division title.
Laszlo shot 81 Sunday to finish at 9-over-par 153. He won the 15-18 title by six over Justin Chan, who closed with 76. Zoey Yamamoto shot 81-76 to capture the girls title by two over Erica Chiang (82—159).
In the younger age groups, Len Yamada (75—155) and Mari Nishiura (77—158) won the 13-14 titles, Brayden Miguel (76—162) and Allysha Mae Mateo (70—145) captured the 11-12 championships, and Jacob Torres (71—142)and Kyra Tomita (82—162) took 10-unders.
Mitsubishi Electric tickets on sale
Tickets for January’s Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai are on sale. The tournament of champions has been opening the Champions Tour season the past 17 years. The 2014 event is Jan. 17-19.
A pass for the week is $25 in advance and a one-day pass is $15. Kids 18-under are free with a ticketed adult. Tickets can be purchased online at pgatour.com/mec or by calling 800-417-2770.
The Mitsubishi field is made up of 2012 and 2013 tournament champions, winners of Champions Tour majors from the past five years and special tournament invitees. Players eligible so far include Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Rocco Mediate, Mark O’Meara, Corey Pavin, Craig Stadler and Tom Watson.
In January, John Cook sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to defeat David Frost and win Mitsubishi for the second time in three years. Cook played all 54 regulation holes without a bogey, then birdied both playoff holes.
Fujikawa in position for next stage
Tadd Fujikawa fired a 2-under-par 68 in Wednesday’s second round of the Web.com Tour’s First Qualifying Stage, in Florence, S.C.
Fujikawa has a share of 17th at the halfway point, at 138. The top 34 and ties advance to the second stage.
Chan Kim, the 2006 state high school champ, rallied with a 71 in Dayton, Nev. He is tied for 43rd at 5-over 149. The top 32 and ties move on from that site.
