Buffanblu to Junior Olympics

Mustangs coach mum on future
If Alika Smith is expecting a change in his basketball life, he’s not saying, not yet.
On Monday, the Kalaheo coach wouldn’t confirm or deny interest in — or from — any other position, particularly at the college level. A rumor recently swirled that Smith could end up at Hawaii Hilo, where longtime coach Jeff Law recently stepped down.
Smith guided Kalaheo to a 39-4 record and the Division I boys basketball state crown this season. The year before, the Mustangs went 40-6 en route to the D-II state title.
His father, the late Pete Smith, led Kalaheo to state championships in 1985, ’95 and ’01. The elder Smith coached for a brief time at Chaminade before returning to the prep ranks.
Konawaena stuns Hilo, HPA
It wasn’t your average road trip for a high school baseball team.
Last week, the Konawaena Wildcats were on their way to the other side of Hawaii island — a 112-mile trip each way — when the team van broke down. The Wildcats eventually got to Wong Stadium and upset then-No. 10 Hilo 5-2.
Two days later, they knocked off No. 5 Hawaii Prep 7-3. They closed out the week with a 21-4 win at Kohala and are now 6-1 in BIIF play (3-1 D-II). Konawaena’s preseason wins include a 4-3 win over defending state champion Waiakea and a 4-2 victory over Campbell.
There are also early losses to Pac-Five and Keaau.
EKnowledge provides SAT assistance
EKnowledge, in conjunction with a group of more than 20 NFL and major league players, will donate $200 SAT and ACT PowerPrep Programs to Hawaii high school students.
The donation covers all of the total retail cost of the $200 standard program; there is a fee of $17.55 per standard program for the cost of materials, processing, worldwide distribution and customer service. The programs contain 170 video lessons, 11 hours of instructions, hundreds of practice questions, 18 quizzes and more than 40 hours of class work and 3,000 files of test prep material.
The SAT test dates for 2013 are May 4 and June 1. The ACT tests are Saturday and June 8. To get a copy of the donated software, go to: www.eKnowledge.com/StarAdvertiser or by calling 951-256-4076 (reference the Honolulu Star-Advertiser).
