Parnaby breaks record in UH softball team’s sweep at Cal Poly
University of Hawaii pitcher Kaia Parnaby broke the Rainbow Wahine softball program’s single-season wins record in UH’s doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly today in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Parnaby struck out 10 and held the Mustangs to three hits in a 4-0 win in the series opener. She earned her second complete-game win of the day in UH’s 3-1 victory in the second game.
The senior left-hander raised her record to 33-4, passing previous wins record of 32 set by Melissa Coogan in 2003.
No. 15/20 UH improved to 36-8 overall and 13-1 in Big West play heading into Saturday’s series finale.
UH took the lead in the opener on Keiki Carlos’ RBI triple in the first inning and led 2-0 in the second after Sharla Kliebenstein hit her 10th home run of the season.
The Wahine gave Parnaby more breathing room in the seventh on Leisha Li’ili’i’s two-run single.

Parnaby held Cal Poly to one hit until Lauren Moreno doubled in the bottom of the seventh. After giving up an infield single with two out, Parnaby got a fly out to center field to complete her 11th shutout of the season.
Cal Poly took the lead in the bottom of the first in the second game and UH tied it in the fourth on Jessica Iwata’s leadoff home run.
The Wahine moved ahead in the fifth when Kayla Wartner doubled to left field to score Brynne Buchanan with the go-ahead run. With two runners on, Iwata singled and an error allowed pinch runner Dori Ann Sugai to score.
Parnaby then retired nine of the last 10 batters she faced to finish out win No. 33.
