So much for goal-scoring concerns.
The Hawaii women’s soccer team picked up its first win of 2012 with an offensive explosion, defeating UNLV in a 5-4 thriller Sunday in Las Vegas.
After getting shut out in the season opener on Friday at Nevada, the Rainbow Wahine (1-1) got goals from five players — forward Tiana Fujimoto, midfielders Krystal Pascua, Michelle Nakasone and Addison Carroll, and defender Chelsea Miyake — on eight shots.
UH withstood a furious charge from the Rebels (1-1) in the final minutes. After Nakasone put her team up 5-2 in the 71st minute, UNLV’s Jenn Wolfe came right back with a set-piece score and Macy Jo Harrison cut the lead to a goal in the 73rd.
"It was absolute chaos," UH coach Michele Nagamine said in a postgame phone interview. "It was just crazy. … I can’t even remember the last time I saw a game like that."
After a week in Nevada, the outcome infused her team with confidence heading into the team’s home opener on Friday, against Sacred Heart in the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament.
UNLV beat UH 3-0 in Las Vegas last season, but the outcome was different this time, as UH employed a 4-5-1 lineup, with Fujimoto alone up top. It was UH’s highest goal output in a mainland match since beating San Francisco 5-0 in 2008.
"(The players) realize what they can do," Nagamine said. "There were moments in today’s game where we were just beautiful. We knocked the ball around, we played the game."
