Radford quarterback Cody Lui-Yuen and running back Chris Jackson turned in relatively quick yet highly productive nights to spark the Rams to a convincing win over Roosevelt.
Lui-Yuen threw three touchdown passes, Jackson ran for three scores and Radford reached the end zone on all 10 of its possessions in a 69-0 Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference win at Radford on Friday.
Neither played in the second half and Lui-Yuen finished his night with 214 yards in completing 11 of 19 passes. Jackson closed with 101 yards in total offense (73 rushing, 28 receiving).
The Radford defense had seven tackles for loss, including four sacks, as the Rams improved to 2-0 with the highly efficient performance bred in part in the tough conditions the coaches aim to create in practice.
"They get yelled at a lot during their practices," Radford head coach Fred Salanoa said. "We always tell them we’re going to try to put as much pressure on them in practice so when you come into the game, it’s ‘my coach is out of my ear, now I can just play.’
"That’s the environment we try to put them in in practice so they’re allowed to fly free during the game."
Radford’s no-huddle offense was free-flowing in the first half on its way to scoring on all seven of its drives.
The Rams, who began four drives inside the Roosevelt 35, covered 301 yards in total offense while holding the Rough Riders to 36 going into halftime.
The Rams’ longest drive of the half was their first, when they took possession at their 18 after forcing a Roosevelt punt to open the game. Lui-Yuen completed all three of his passes for 62 yards, the last 33 going to Julian Brown for the Rams’ first touchdown.
Salanoa said Lui-Yuen, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound junior, has the potential to rank among the state’s elite quarterbacks by his senior year, "but he still has a lot of work to do.
"My job as his quarterback coach is to make sure I keep him grounded and make sure I allow him to get better," Salanoa said.
Radford’s next three scores came on the ground — two by Jackson and another by Mason Manuma — to cap drives of 22, 35 and 17 yards.
