Three 6- to 8-foot sharks were spotted off Kualoa Beach Park this morning by Ocean Safety personnel as lifeguards warn people to stay out of the water at the scenic Windward Oahu beach.

Shark warning signs also remain posted at the beach for a second day after sharks were seen feeding on a whale carcass on Friday, which state Department of Land and Natural Resources and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials began monitoring four to five miles off Windward Oahu on Thursday.

The 30- to 40-foot sperm whale carcass was reported on the reef about 150 yards offshore by Mokolii Island (Chinaman’s Hat) on Friday. After officials determined that towing the carcass out to sea would result in its return to shore, arrangements were made to have it towed to the Heeia Kea small boat harbor for processing and eventual disposal today.

Boaters and fishermen are warned to stay out of the harbor and surrounding area due to the possible presence of sharks.
