Moanalua needed every error Roosevelt could give it.
Tyler Fujimoto forced Edison Sakata into a weak foul pop to first base with runners on first and second to close out Moanalua’s 9-8 win over Roosevelt at Stevenson Intermediate School on Saturday.
Fujimoto came in with the bases loaded and two outs, but immediately gave up a two-run single to Kainalu Pitoy to pull the Rough Riders within a run. He worked the count to 2-1 before getting Sakata to put a swing on an outside pitch.
"He is one of our starters, but we are trying more than one," Moanalua coach Scott Yamada said. "Our starter (Nicholas Manago) pitched well enough to win; fortunately we scored enough runs early."
Moanalua led 9-2 after 51/2 innings, thanks to eight Roosevelt errors, at least one in every inning after a 1-2-3 first. Then Manago ran into a little bit of trouble. He was pulled in favor of Jorden Takushi with two runners on in the sixth, but Roosevelt treated the reliever rudely and scored four runs to close it to 9-6.
Roosevelt played error-free ball in the top of the seventh, then got to Moanalua’s third pitcher, Casey Isa, before Fujimoto could close it out.
Moanalua improved to 4-3, while Roosevelt dropped to 3-4. Na Menehune, who opened their season with an equally tense 5-4 win over the Rough Riders, host unbeaten Castle on Wednesday.
Roosevelt’s four losses this season have come by a combined five runs. The Rough Riders visit Kailua on Wednesday, after beating them 7-6 earlier this season.
"That’s the thing about our kids, they never give up," Roosevelt coach Les Loo said.
"The defense has been solid. I don’t know what happened today. At least we fought back."
Na Menehune are on their first winning streak of the season because they put the ball into play against the Rough Riders. They only struck out once, and when they put the bat on the ball, something good usually happened.
Moanalua had nine hits. Mark Kuga led the way with three hits and Elijah Monis added two.
"We just got lucky and put the ball in play," Yamada said. "We put pressure on the defense; that is something we try to do."
